One Evening, Early October

I kind of liked the fact that you
were just
a little
afraid of me.

Was it the strain of autumn in the air
or my hand in the small of your back
that made you shiver?

I offered you my jacket,
thinking about giving you something
to regret for the rest of your life,
and wondering
if your pink gloss lips
would taste of strawberries.

You grew careless,
as the evening progressed.
Tongue loosened,
and emboldened by corner shop wine,
you asked me where I was staying tonight.

In the morning,
you'd wake up with a hangover.
You didn't need the added complication
of waking up with me.
So I kissed you once, quietly, in the dark,
and left.
