This is VegasOrValhalla.net.

My name is Stevie Gray, and this is my soap box.  This is where I'll be posting fiction, poetry, objects of interest (to me, at least), and pretty much whatever I feel like editorialising about at any given time.  If anything I post here offends or bothers you, then... well, find another website.

"Vegas Or Valhalla" - a little background...

The name wasn't chosen (for this website, the poems of the same title, or the tattoo on my stomach) purely  on the basis that it was a nifty bit of alliteration and it sounded cool.

I've never actually been to Vegas.  I'd like to go.  Not just for the "Fear and Loathing" gaudy Americana reasons, either.  I want to see it because it's one of those places that are so iconic and well-known that you forget just how absurd it is.  Here is the lush, decadent pleasure-capital of - arguably - the world.  This is a place that oozes opulence, where every extravagant whim or vice will be indulged.  And it's smack in the middle of some of the most inhospitable terrain on the planet.  We could have built it anywhere, and we chose there.  How spectacularly human is that?  And I want to see Las Vegas through the other side of the telescope.  Everyone seems to think of bright lights and loud noises, right up close.  I want to drive out some night - away from the strip - out into the desert, and keep going until the city is just a bright little huddle of lights on the horizon when I look back.  I'll do it one day.

Valhalla is a different kind of iconic.  In Valhalla, the worthiest of warriors fight and feast with their god, waiting for the final epic showdown.  It sounds like one of the better afterlife options.

Nordic legends and the American Dream...  I'll let you decide which is the more fictitious.

But the point of "Vegas Or Valhalla" is this:

Wherever the journey takes you, whatever happens, whatever it costs you, whatever you lose on the way, you keep walking, otherwise what's the fucking point?
